cetatea_poienari_3Poenari Citadel (Cetatea Poenari in Romanian), is a ruined castle in Romania, in Argeş County (Căpăţânenii Pământeni village of the Arefu commune) on a canyon formed on the Argeş River valley, close to the Făgăraş Mountains. It stands on a cliff, on the right side of the Transfăgărăşan road which climbs high into the mountains. Poenari Castle is said to be one of the most haunted places in the world because all the people think that this place was Dracula’s real home.

All this myth comes along with the story that Vlad Tepes, was retreating here after the battle with the Turks, but also according to legend, this is the castle that Vlad Dracula forced the nobles of Targoviste to build, and then killed them without any remorse.

This castle is not located incredibly close to a village, so the recommended way to get there is to rent a car or maybe hitchhike. There is parking space available next to the road at the foot of the mountain, near the river. The fortress itself is accessible by climbing close to 1480 steps!

There are wonderful views of the valleys and forested mountains in the surroundings from the castle, as well as the nearby villages and the imposing ruin itself.

There are a few pensions located in the small villages between Curtea de Arges and the fortress who can host you for a wicked night.
